2015! Wow! Is it really 2015?
I remember waiting for an eternity to turn sixteen so I could get my driver’s license and be free to drive
my 1972 Camaro by myself!
More recently, I enjoyed driving around Arkansas for the past sixteen years serving churches. I still enjoy
driving. There’s a solitude, a freedom, a new something around each curve.
So we begin another year, another twelve month cycle, another road trip.
The road map I am urging us to follow in 2015 is a very familiar verse. It comes from the mouth of Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 ESV
Let us live out this verse in our lives and in our church in 2015 in these five ways:
Persistence! “Seek” is a command with continuous action. Our whole lifestyle is to be seeking Jesus and following Jesus continuously.
Priorities! “First” is the order of things. Don’t just put Jesus first at the top of your list. Put everything in your list in a box and make Jesus first in EVERY box.
Perspective! “Kingdom of God” is a focus on eternal results. We don’t just ask how something will benefit us or our church, but will it bring more people into heaven and less people going to hell.
Practice! “Righteousness” is making holy choices daily. It is doing the right thing every time whether anyone is watching or not.
Possessions! “These things” are how we see and use the material things we treasure in life. Jesus pointed out that the number one contender for our hearts against God is material possessions, money, things, or mammon.
He said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” And He said, “You cannot serve God and money.” (Matthew 6: 1, 4)
I’m looking forward to this New Year as your pastor. Let our prayer for 2015 be:
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10 ESV)
