What I Heard on Our Adventure

I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

Psalm 116:1-2

My grands call me “Pawpa,” pronounced “PAW-PAW.”

“Let’s go fishin’, Pawpa!” When my three-year-old and-four-year-old grandchildren speak, PawPa listens! I’m all ears! I want to give them my full attention. So we go dig worms or sometimes go buy them and we go “fishin’.”

I know how fleeting these precious moments are. I understand these moments can be rare when they become teenagers.

So I bend over to their level or pull them up into my lap so that I can be sure we communicate with each other.

Sometimes they say, “PawPa, let’s go play golf.” That means I take them to the Magellan chipping green in the afternoon when we won’t bother anyone. I let them try their little putters, but mostly they watch me putt and race to get the ball before it gets to the hole.

Recently we went to the Balboa beach, took their shoes off, played in the sand and collected “sea shells” which are really muscle shells, but who cares! I listened to them talk about their amazement with the shells!

I listened. I think they said, “PawPa . . .” at least a thousand times that day. It seemed every sentence started with “PawPa . . .” I was so tired after spending half-a-day with them! But our “adventure” to the beach, golf course, walking trail, and playground was worth it!

I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

Psalm 116:1-2

God inclines his ear to us! He bends over and loves to hear his children ask him questions. Unlike me, God never gets tired! He doesn’t wear down like we grandparents do.

He hears our voice. Our voice is recognized by him. What a thought! What a reality! He loves to hear our amazement at His creation.

Grandkids might talk less to their grandparents as they grow toward the teen years. But let us cry out to our loving, caring God through Jesus Christ at each stage of life with increasing intensity and regularity!

Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father who art in heaven …” Go ahead, give it a try. God’s listening. He’s bending over with his hand cupped to his ear. He wants to hear your voice.

Our Father, thank-you for listening. Thank-you for sending Jesus so that we can have a Father-child relationship with you. Thank-you for a living, breathing relationship that is real, not just religious ritual!
