Dinner’s Ready

“I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways.”

Psalm 85:8 NLT

“Come to the table, dinner’s ready.” For most of us, that would be an important statement. We would tune-in and come immediately! The older we get the more we appreciate a good, home-cooked meal.

But when a couple of four-year-olds are engrossed in a cartoon, stopping to eat a meal is a chore. They tend to tune out “adult talk.” They don’t even hear it until it is repeated the second or third time. And then they whine, “Oh, do we have to?!”

For almost two months our daughter, her husband, their four-year-old twins, and sixteen-month old have been living with us while transitioning from their Nashville, Tennessee home to their new home in Bryant, Arkansas.

I’m pretty sure the twins hear just fine. Listening is another issue! Listening requires focus and concentration. Listening to Mom or Dad means having to do something in response. It’s just more convenient not to listen.

Does God speak? Absolutely! He speaks through the Bible, His Spirit, circumstances, and other people!

Why don’t we hear Him then? Perhaps it is the same reasons children do not “hear” their parents.

First, we don’t listen to God because we will have to stop doing what we are so engrossed in doing at the moment. It’s inconvenient.

Second, we don’t listen because if we hear God speak, it will always require a response. We will have to come to what Henry Blackaby in Experiencing God calls “a crisis of belief.”

Dr. Blackaby explains the process of “Experiencing God” this way: 1) God is always working around us, 2) God desires a relationship with us, 3) He invites us to be involved in what He is doing, 4) GOD SPEAKS, 5) a crisis of belief results, 6) adjust your life, then 7) experience & obey God.

As Psalm 85:6 says, either we carefully listen to what God is saying, adjust, do it, and experience His peace or we return to our own folly of doing things our own way.

Has God spoken to you? Are you in a “crisis of belief?” Are you willing to adjust your life to obey and experience God?

“Dinner’s ready!” So what will it be? Will you keep watching that silly cartoon or experience a God-cooked meal of obeying and experiencing Him?
