Cozumel’s Secret

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26 ESV

He gathers them into a tight group and turns out the light, engulfing everything in a darkness that leaves everyone feeling eerily helpless. It’s so dark that you can’t see your hand in front of your face. If the guide slipped off into the darkness, there would be no hope of getting out on your own. The group is at the mercy of the guide with the light.

Cozumel, Mexico is known for beautiful, white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear, blue ocean waters. This vacation destination is also home to underground caves forged by the Rio Secreto, or Secret River. Only trained guides who know the underground passages can take tourists into the darkness. A powerful headlamp allows all who follow to see. As the group wades into the cold waters of the river, the lamp illuminates the underground wonders. People pay big bucks to experience up close the underground beauty.

Do you believe this? Whether you have been to the Rio Secreto or not, you have no doubt that standing in a cave without a light would leave you helplessly lost in total darkness.

Do you believe this? Whether you believe Jesus is the resurrection or not, you believe death is a certainty. You will enter that cave regardless of your beliefs.  Will you spend eternity in eternal darkness or in the illumination of God’s presence?

Jesus asked Martha, “Do you believe this?”  Martha said to Jesus,

“Yes, Lord: I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

John 11:27

This was an easy confession, right? Jesus is standing right in front of her. No, her brother Lazarus had died, she was in her fourth day of grieving, and Jesus had not come to help. So her confession was not easy, but in the pit of despair. What great faith!

Do you believe this?  Your belief in Jesus will determine whether you spend eternity in the despair of darkness or in light and beauty.

Do you believe this? God loves you so much He sent His Son to die for you! Oh, please believe before it is too late. There are no “do-overs” beyond death.

Father, I believe in your Son Jesus! I accept Him into my life. Forgive my sin. I believe Jesus IS the resurrection and the life. I believe. I believe! Be my Lord.
