Each summer my parents made sure I attended Vacation Bible School. Each morning we pledged allegiance to the flags and the Bible. Someone held up a big Bible front and center and we said,
“I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word, I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and I will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.”
It is based on a couple of verses in Psalm 119. “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (v.11) And “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (v.105)
Looking into the future, Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:7) “Sanctify” means to be made holy. How? By the truth which is God’s word.
Vance Havner said,
“If you want to be popular, preach happiness. If you want to be unpopular, preach holiness.”
We live in a world of rampant sexual immorality and numbing apathy toward the things of God. So, it is increasingly unpopular to speak of holiness and saturating our mind with God’s word.
We avoid Scripture for good reason! “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword … discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ) Most of us don’t relish having our secrets and motives revealed!
Get a grip! “Hold firmly to the word of life.” (Philippians 2:16 NLT) To get a grip on God’s Word, you need six habits:
- hearing it
- reading it
- studying it
- memorizing it
- meditating on it, and
- applying it.
What is meditation? Have you ever worried? Then you know how to meditate! Worrying is rolling a negative thought over and over in your mind. Meditating on Scripture is rolling a verse over and over in your mind.
“But I don’t know how to study the Bible.” Ok, here’s a simple method. Read a passage of Scripture then answer these six S.P.A.C.E. questions:
- Sin to confess?
- Promise to claim?
- Attitude to change?
- Command to obey?
- Example to follow?
With each question, reread the verses allowing God’s Word to be applied personally to you.
Get a grip on God’s Word daily!

Father, thank-you for your word preserved for us in the Bible. Sanctify us as we listen, read, study, memorize, meditate, and apply Your truth to our lives.
