Believe

“Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.'”

John 6:29 ESV

C. S. Lewis said, “We are what we believe we are.”

One of the most successful companies in the world is known by a single word, Apple. They believe in challenging the status quo. They believe in thinking differently.

The Wright brothers did not just want to invent a flying machine, but they believed that a flying machine could change the course of the world.

Martin Luther King believed that until man’s laws line up with God’s laws, there will not be justice. He didn’t give the “I have a plan” speech, but the “I have a dream” speech!

When you wake up tomorrow morning, for whom or what will you live your day? Why do you exist? What do you believe, really believe? What makes you passionate?

Solomon was the wisest and wealthiest man who ever lived. He tried it all! He tried to answer the question with everything this world has to offer: sex, drink, food, palaces, and more. In the end he declared in Ecclesiastes that all is vain.

So you and I will not find the answer by looking around horizontally. The answer can only be found by going vertical. Only God can satisfy our deepest longing.

God has put eternity in every person’s heart. (Eccl.3:11) So our deepest longing cannot be met by anything temporary. No pleasure, relationship, possession, experience, nor any other earth-bound thing can fill the “eternity” God has placed in us.

Only a work of God can do it. Jesus is the work of God. The eternal longing in our hearts can only be met by believing in Jesus whom God sent, died for our sin and lives today because of his resurrection.

Jesus healed the man born blind. His response to Jesus was simple and profound: “And he said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and he worshiped him.” John 9:38 ESV

What do you believe? Does it answer the “eternity” question? Has what your believed changed your life?

“Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.'”

John 6:29 ESV

Our Father, thank-you for the privilege of have our deepest longing answered by believing in Jesus as your Son and our Savior.
