Tell Me a Story

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Romans 10:17 ESV

Our four and five year-old grandchildren love to hear Gram read a book to them. One of the few times they are still is when they are sitting beside her mesmerized by the pictures in the book and the words coming from the voice of my wife.

When I was in the third grade of Glenwood Elementary just a few miles from here, during the last minutes of each Friday’s school day, Mrs. Thrash read a chapter in a book entitled “The Boxcar Children.” My imagination transported me to this boxcar and the amazing lives of these children living in it! I couldn’t wait for Friday afternoons!

I’ve always struggled with reading the written page and getting it to a level of comprehension. But when someone read a book to me, the stories came alive instantly!

When I traveled around Arkansas as a preacher, consultant, and trainer to hundreds of Baptist churches for sixteen years, I discovered the joy of the audiobook!

Often I drove one to three hours to get to a church in some corner of the state. As I drove and listened to a book being read to me, it was like a movie being played in my head. It was wonderful. It was emotional. It was sometimes life-changing.

In a world of Facebook, Twitter, Google, the Internet, and millions of books, the spoken word has not lost its power. Some would still argue that preaching is obsolete and so old fashioned that “going to church” is unnecessary to their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Do you want your faith to grow? I hope you do. Essential to faith is reading the Bible, studying it, and applying it to your life. Prayer is essential to growing your faith. But also an essential element to faith is hearing the spoken word of Christ in preaching.

Are you faithfully and regularly growing your faith by hearing the word of Christ with other believers?

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”

Romans 10:17

Our Father, thank-you for your Word given by your Spirit, preserved in the Bible, and incarnated in Jesus Christ. Help us to hear and be transformed by Your Story.
