The aroma of homemade Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies filled our home. With a tall glass of cold milk, I enjoyed one, maybe two!
To insist Jesus alone is the only way to heaven is believed by many people antiquated, arrogant, narrow-minded, and unjust. Our tolerant-minded culture is intolerant of a message that Christ alone is The Way to know God.
What does that have to do with milk and a cookie? Well, hang on.
It is popular today to believe we are all climbing the same mountain to the same God but just taking different routes. First, the mountain is impossible to climb, only perfection achieves this goal and we all fall short. Second, Christ alone came down the mountain, who is God in the flesh, lived a perfect life, died a perfect death, and provides perfect forgiveness. Only by faith in Him can we be carried up the mountain by God’s grace.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 ESV
So you may ask, “But how could a loving God send a good person to hell?” Well, there is no “good person” except Christ alone. We are all sinners who cannot come into the presence of Holy God. But you may insist, “As long as the good in my life outweighs the bad, then I’m a good person!”
Now for that glass of milk. If my wife offers me a glass of delicious, cold milk and proved only 49% of it was cow dung, would I drink it? I would not even touch my lips to it! How repulsive! What if it were only 1% cow dung? Of course not!
In the same way, the Holy God rejects a “good person” with just a little bit of sin. Even one sin makes you and me a sinner. One act of lying makes us a liar. One act of stealing makes us a thief. One act of taking God’s name in vain makes us a blasphemer.
Universalism is an insult to our Creator. To assert that our man-made ways of climbing up to Him are as good as God’s sacrifice of His Perfect Son, who gave body and blood, surely is a lie that makes light of God’s supreme act of mercy.
A better question is, “How can a Just and Holy God send sinners like us to heaven?” The answer is the sufficiency of Christ. He alone is sufficient to provide forgiveness and salvation.
Only “with Christ” are we made pure and eternal life in a perfect heaven possible. “God … made us alive together with Christ … and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:4-6 ESV
