Electricity is All Around Us

Thomas Edison patented the first commercially successful light bulb in 1879. A light bulb cannot produce light unless it is connected to electricity. Its purpose for existence becomes null and void. Electricity can be all around the bulb and yet the bulb is unable to shine unless connected to it.

God created us to seek Him, feel Him, and find Him. God is working to reveal Himself to us.

“Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.'”

Acts 17:26-28

Theology 101: When we speak of God being wholly other and beyond us, we call that transcendence. When we speak of God being everywhere all the time, the term is omnipresence. When God comes down and reveals Himself, we refer to that as manifest presence.

The great biblical figure Moses exclaimed to God, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15) He was terrified at taking another step without God’s visible, obvious, and undeniable manifest presence.

The perfect and complete manifest presence of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, said, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)  Break a branch from a grapevine and it cannot produce a single grape. Its source for existence is removed. Without Jesus we are a dead branch unable to give ourselves life.

God’s manifest presence is God revealing His glory. The glory of God cannot be programed. A building cannot be constructed that contains God’s glory.

We can pray, but only God can answer it. We can preach, but only God can convict the heart. We can worship, but only God can melt us. We can believe, but only God can save us. We can accept our diversity, but only God can makes us one. We can gather with others, but only God can give genuine relationships.

How do you know if electricity is connected to a light bulb? It is obvious. Light is produced. The light is beyond anything the bulb can produce by itself. The light is the manifest presence of electricity.

God created you. Is the light on? Apart from Jesus Christ, the light of God’s glory cannot shine. Yes, God is all around you everywhere all the time, but are you connected?

Our Father in heaven, we cannot go another step without your obvious presence. Please show us your glory.
