I saw my Dad build an elaborate Martin box with multiple rooms. I asked him to teach me how to build a simple blue bird box. He took me to his small shop in our basement and helped me build one.

My mother made most of the dresses for my sister. I asked Mom to teach me how to sew. Well, I never sewed a dress, but she taught me the basics of turning on the sewing machine. I knew how to stitch scraps of cloth together.

My brother-in-law did some professional fishing. He took me fishing one day at Lake Ouachita and revealed to me some tricks to catching a fish.

When we see someone doing something with expertise, if we aren’t a know-it-all, we sometimes ask them to show us how to do it.

“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.’”

Luke 11:1 ESV

It is amazing to me that Jesus prayed. If the perfect Son of God needed prayer, how much more I need to pray! How awesome it must have been to personally watch Jesus pray to his heavenly Father with whom he had a perfect relationship!

Then one of his disciples said, “Teach us to pray.” This is an effective way to deal with our pride. Asking for help and having a teachable spirit eliminates pride. Pride is a deadly sin when it comes to intimate fellowship with God.

About 500 verses in the Bible address prayer. Some have compared prayer to spiritual breathing and Scripture to spiritual food. Just think how important breathing and eating is to our bodies!

“Teach us to pray.” And Jesus did. He gave them this model,

“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Luke 11:2-4

Take a deep breath right now, doesn’t that feel good. Now, go do some spiritual breathing! Breathe in deeply the compassion of God who sent His Son to die for you.
