In the horse and buggy days a pastor climbed into his buggy after a day of leading his congregation in worship. His horse obviously struggled more than usual and the wheels sank into the soft ground. He looked back into his buggy and discovered the prank. Someone had filled his buggy with rocks!

Twenty years later, three middle-aged men knocked on his door. When he answered the door, one of the men said, “Do you remember that Sunday when your buggy was filled with rocks?”

The minister responded with a smile, “So you’ve been carrying those rocks around for twenty years?! I unloaded those rocks twenty years ago.”

You have been hurt, offended, or “done-wrong.” How do I know? It happens to everyone sooner or later. Are you carrying those rocks around still today or have you unloaded them?

In the model prayer, also known as the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus gave special attention to one of the petitions. When he said,

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”

(Matthew 6:12),

and he went on to explain,

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

(Matthew 6:14-15)

The forgiveness you receive is in direct proportion to the forgiveness you give. Ouch! That means I can no longer hold that grudge and genuinely pray the Lord’s Prayer!!

Refusing to forgive others is like saying, “I’m going to carry these rocks around for the next 20 years until I get even, or get revenge, or whatever!” How ridiculous. Carrying those rocks around gives you no power over them! In fact, it lessens your power for living TODAY!

Jesus’ teaching is directed at his disciples, those who are already believers. Salvation is given when someone repents of being a sinner before a holy God and receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That’s a one-time experience. But daily cleansing through confession of sin is necessary to walk in fellowship with the Lord and to be sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

A disciple of Jesus cannot be in daily fellowship with Christ while carrying around the rocks of unforgiveness.

“Father please forgive me for the rocks I put in your buggy just like I forgave those who put rocks in my buggy.”
