Older but Better

“Getting old is not for sissies!” It can sure be discouraging when we lose agility, energy, zeal for life, or health.

About a month ago some symptoms told me I needed to get checked out. I’m 61 and look healthy. But I drove myself to the ER at Baptist in Little Rock. Less than 48 hours later I am back home sporting two brand new stents.

I had visited hundreds of folks in the hospital as a pastor for 40 years, but this was the first time I had spent the night in a hospital as a patient since I was five years old and my tonsils were removed.

Throughout the entire process, I can honestly say I had no fear. Well, not fear for my life. I did have a fear that I was imagining my symptoms and I would be sent home looking like a hypochondriac.

Really, I was not afraid. I had a total peace about the whole thing. While I spent those two nights and part of three days in the hospital, I was at rest. I did have confidence in the health care system, but I know even simple procedures cause something to go wrong and life on this earth can be over suddenly.

I am certain my peace of mind came from God in whom I have put my faith since a child. It is good to know that the peace of God that passes understanding proved true.

Even though this body will continue to deteriorate over time, I am sure that spiritually I am getting better every day. Even though things are going south physically, I am assured that inwardly everything is getting better. How do I know this?

I knew this promise in principle. I knew it was in the Bible. I had read it many times. I knew this promise is mine through faith. So I again found the verses and memorized them. Here’s one of my new favorite Bible passages.

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

Do you have this kind of peace which is not based on how life goes in this world? If not, please come to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior! Learn to trust Him and His word.
