What Are the Odds?

Haley traveled thousands of miles across several continents to discover his genealogy. Many Americans today also have an incredible yearning for tracking down their linage. This helps us understand the amazing popularity of the most popular television miniseries in history, Alex Haley’s Roots.

Jewish citizens in the first century could determine their ancestors without traveling far. Temple records carefully noted the Jewish people’s ancestry preserving their identity in a history of turmoil in the ancient world. No missing ancestry problem existed in first-century Israel.

A crucial prophecy of the Messiah is that he would be a descendant of David and his kingdom would last forever. So in the Bible, Matthew traces Jesus’ legal father Joseph and Luke outlines the linage of Jesus’ birth mother Mary back to King David. When we read the Bible, we often skip over these lists.

About 300 prophesies detail the coming Messiah’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. Some prophecies refer to the same detail, so about sixty prophecies are unique. Jesus fulfilled them all. The chances of one man completing forty-eight prophecies are one in ten to the 157th power, that’s a one with 157 zeros. Just to fulfill eight prophecies, the odds are 1 in 10 multiplied by itself twenty-one times.

Matthew 1:22-23 says, “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).”

Finding another person with your same DNA is 1 in 70 trillion when there are only about 7 billion people in the world. Experts say those numbers make it impossible. So you are more likely to find someone with your DNA than someone to fulfill the prophecies Jesus fulfilled.

But numbers do not give you faith. Rather “… faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). Hear the word of God, “But as he (Joseph) considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit’” (Matthew 1:20).

What a leap of faith, Jesus is the literal son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit. What are the odds?! Will you believe in the Lordship and resurrection of Jesus as your Savior?
